Murtosa is known as the heart of the Ria de Aveiro, making the Moliceiro boat a symbol of the municipality.

By belonging to a region closely linked to the sea and the Ria, Murtosa’s main activities are focused on fishing, the canning industry, and seaweed.

After all, the municipality has the highest density of piers and anchorages in the Ria de Aveiro and an enormous lagoon biodiversity.

Murtosa is known for still developing a unique artisanal fishing type – the Arte Xávega – a centuries-old tradition of trawl fishing with boats created for the purpose.

The local gastronomy is dominated by eels – fried, pickled, or in a stew.
