ÍLHAVO

The municipality of Ílhavo has ‘the sea by tradition’ in honor of the main way of life of the population – salt and fishing.

Its tradition extends to clay and ceramics, as the region is known worldwide for the porcelain from the Vista Alegre Factory.

Near the beaches, you can find the tallest lighthouse on the Iberian Peninsula, in Barra, and the traditional colored haystacks, in Costa Nova, which attract many visitors every year.

Inevitably, gastronomy is tied to the sea, and cod dishes assume a major role. In addition, the bread and “folar” from Vale de Ílhavo still baked in wood-fired ovens by traditional bakers are a must.

Ílhavo’s cultural offer is well-known nationally, with several creative spaces, shows, and an eclectic and innovative program.
